Law Reform
Integral to the vision of Women's Legal Services (WLS) is a just legal
system for women. To achieve this, WLS initiates and participates in
law reform activities at state and national levels.
In setting the agenda for law reform activities, Women's Legal Services
examines the experiences of clients. Using case studies and statistics
gathered through the provision of legal advice, WLS identifies gender
bias and inequity in the law.
Women's Legal Services employs a variety of strategies to advocate for
a better legal system. These include:
- Written submissions to law reform inquiries
- Public presentations
- Meetings with politicians and government representatives
- Letter-writing campaigns
- Campaigns to raise awareness about law reform
- Statements to the media
Women's Legal Services also works in partnership with other organisations,
applying pressure to governments and the courts to ensure laws and policies
are fair for women.
By continuously monitoring and challenging the law, Women's Legal Services
has contributed to state and federal law reform. This includes work in
the areas of:
- Family Law
- Legal aid funding cuts
- Sexual assault and domestic violence
- Aboriginal customary law
- Child support legislation
- Child protection and the Family Court
- Credit and debt
- IVF and the Sex Discrimination Act
- Aboriginal women in prison
- Sexual assault communications privilege
